Tahoma Band Student Set the Pace Over a Busy Weekend!

This past Friday, the Tahoma Jazz Ensemble 1 competed in the Viking Jazz Competition in Poulsbo, WA.  There were competing ensembles performing every 20 minutes from 8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. Tahoma’s jazz ensemble earned a spot into the evening Finals Competition as 1 of 6 bands where they won Outstanding Rhythm Section and 3rd place! They also had a chance to hear a performance with Roger Ingram – the lead trumpet player for the past 20 years with Harry Connick Jr.’s Jazz Band!

Outstanding Rhythm Section (Viking Jazz Comp.)

Then after getting back from the jazz competition around 10:30 Friday night, many band members (over 50 entries) performed and competed in the Green River Regional Solo & Ensemble contest.  The event took place at Auburn Riverside High School starting at 8 a.m. and finished with the last performances around 5 p.m. These students have been working above and beyond the concert and performance curriculum to prepare a solo or a small ensemble. After months of preparation, they perform their prepared piece for a room full of peers and an adjudicator.  At the end of the day, the top performances are ranked 1) Category Winner, 2) 1st Alternate and 3) 2nd Alternate.

Added Bonus: This was the first year that we had string players as part of our band and our Beginning String Program at the Middle Schools participate.  Trevor Lind, Senior (Drum Major, Trombone) earned a “Superior – I” rating at regionals performing a solo on the Upright String Bass in addition to the trombone. The orchestra event (occurring the same day and location as the winds and percussion event) included both high school and middle school students. Our new Tahoma Beginning Orchestra program had a number of participants at the orchestra solo & ensemble contest too! A first and a successful step of our blossoming new addition to the Tahoma Academic Music Community!

The soloists and ensembles from Tahoma who placed will have an opportunity to compete at the state level The state competition will take place at the end of April at Central Washington University!

Congratulations to all of our performing and competing soloists and ensembles!
